LET’S COUNT HOW MANY OF THEM ARE THERE IN THE WORLD !

Ever wondered or thought about how much population of the world comprises of the chess players…

Famously quoted by Edward Winter which says-

“Nobody knows, even roughly, how many people play chess, and nobody should pretend to know.”

CHESS! THE MOST POPULAR GAME IN THE WORLD OR NOT?

Well it cannot be guessed as well as predicted but here are some of the evaluated numbers of the chess players, tournament players and grandmasters.

Let’s take a review of them at a glance!

According to a survey data from YouGov around 600,000,000 players were measured who have played in the past year were put forward by FIDE in 2012.

Apparently no one can approximately identify the real numbers of players but according to the range estimated which was as high as in billion and as moderately as FIDE’s prior estimation of 200-300 million it is crystal clear that chess is one of the most popular game in the world today and as well as in the past.

As in the records of the FIDE it has over 360,000 active tournament players present in its member’s database. Chess players register themselves in FIDE when they are participants of the internationally rated events. Basically it is for all the serious chess players who play with full passion and usually progress to this level.

So about 185 nations and states hold membership in the FIDE. Many of the nations organize the list of their members as nationally registered tournament players.

In 2016, the U.S Chess Federation opened up that it has more than 85,000 registered tournament players among its membership. Only a small amount of them are registered internationally with FIDE.

GRANDMASTER- The most renowned and highest title in the field of chess.

There are about 1,594 GM and still counting.

It is one of the highest title (INTERNATIONAL GRANDMASTER) and it is awarded by FIDE. Basically it requires lots of patience, hard work and struggle to earn this title. The player must have a very high level of consistency in his moves as well the strategies used. The player should earn three ‘grandmaster norms’ and should gain a 2500 Elo rating. Only a small fraction of tournament players reach this level.

So the world has 1,594 grandmasters residing of these 1,559 are males and 35 are females. This ratio is the same with the number of men and women playing chess.

So yes Chess is life they say well said!
